Join TBE and Christ Church Cranbrook for our first-ever joint Interfaith Education program as we explore some of the foundational stories of our traditions together. Both Christian Parables and Jewish Midrash (commenting on narratives from the Torah) provide us with powerful insights and succinct images of holy living that are often paradoxical and layered with meaning. In the process, they provide us with a window through which to view our own complex, contradictory, and sometimes chaotic lives.

In addition to Rabbi Miller and Rev. Bill Danaher, we will be joined by Vanderbilt University Professor Amy-Jill Levine. Professor Levine was at TBE most recently for our Glazer Institute in 2016, and will help us unpack three parables from the Gospel of Luke and three stories with Midrash from the Book of Genesis. Each pair of texts is connected thematically, and holds particular insight into the ways that Christians and Jews approach the world:

  • October 14 – The Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32)

  • October 21 – Cain & Abel (Genesis 4:1-16)

  • October 28 – The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

  • November 4 – The Rape of Dina (Genesis 34:1-31)

  • November 11 – The Dishonest Steward (Luke 16:1-13)

  • November 18 – Jacob & Esau (Genesis 27:1-41)

Week One: The Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32)

Week Two: Cain & Abel (Genesis 4:1-16)

Week Three: The Good Samaritan (Luke: 10:25-37)

Week Four: The Rape Of Dina (Genesis: 34:1-31)
