Featured in the Birmingham-Bloomfield section of the May 27 Detroit Free Press was Matt Broder, senior pitcher on the Cranbrook Kingswood varsity baseball team. As of May 20, Matt’s senior record stood at 5-1. Matt is the son of Andrew & Merrilee Broder.
Graduates of this year’s Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, sponsored by the Jewish Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education, include Temple members, Denise Brown, Joyce LaBan, Myron LaBan and F. Judith Martens.
Named in the Detroit Jewish News’ annual Cap & Gown listing of the Top Michigan Jewish Community Seniors were Beth El graduates: Michael Brown, Alec Cohen, Taylor Cohn, Marissa Kaye, Rachel Kessler, Lauren Kerwin, Meme Resnick, Rebecca Segel, Steven Siegel & Charles Brody Starkman.
Michael Brown and Eric Sircus were named runners-up in the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Detroit Section’s Youth Awards. Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, community commitment , the writing of an essay and interviews by a panel of judges. Michael is the son of Elissa & Robert Brown. Eric is the son of Linda & Scott Sircus.
Jan Durecki, Temple Archivist, was among the 30,000 participants in the 17th annual Susan C. Komen’s Race for the Cure, May 31 in Detroit.
Mara S. Deutch recently graduated with honors from Michigan State University, receiving degrees in Journalism and Spanish. She is currently completing her student teaching to earn yet another degree. Mara’s proud mother is Audrey Deutch.
Featured in the Thursday, June 12 issue of The Detroit Free Press was an update on the doings of the Indie rock band , The Silent Years, and its lead singer and songwriter, Josh Epstein. The award-winning group was on stage June 14 at CAID for Detour’s Rock Festival.
Heidi Joanne Gross, daughter of Dr. Marvin & Marion Gross, has added a Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix to her many degrees. She holds an Associates Degree of Liberal Arts from Oakland Community College, Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology & Sociology from Oakland University, a Diploma from Association Montessori International Education Center and a Post Baccalaureate Teacher in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix.
Philip Handleman is the recipient of the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame’s Harriet Quimby Award for contributions to aviation art and literature. He is the author of 20 aviation books.
Dr. Robert S. Jampel is the recipient of the prestigious Weiner Award of the Wayne State University Medical School alumni for outstanding service to the medical school. The award was presented by Shirley Weiner in memory of her late husband, Dr. Lawrence Weiner.
Rick Loewenstein has been appointed Chief Executive Officer for JARC . Currently Chief Advancement Officer of Cranbrook Educational Community, he assumes his new position July 21.
Marissa Lowen, daughter of Karen & Alan Lowen, has graduated from Eastern Michigan University and is now employed by Nordstrom Corporation. Scott Lowen, a recent high school graduate, has been accepted to Central Michigan University.
Nanci J. Rands has been elected national chair of Project Interchange (PI), an institute of the American Jewish Committee whose goal is to share insights about Israel with seminar participants from around the world. In the past, PI has brought 4,500 Metro Detroiters to Israel. Dr. Roberta Toll serves on the Project Interchange board.
Scott Remer, grandson of Jackie & Earl Remer, finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee. An 8th grader at Cleveland, Ohio’s Beechwood Middle School, Scott was among the dozen top spellers who made it to the final round, televised live May 30 on ABC.
Alan E. Schwartz is this year’s recipient of the American Jewish Committee, Metropolitan Detroit Chapter’s Judge Learned Hand Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding leader in the legal profession who exemplifies the principles personified by Judge Hand.
