Larry Imerman Brotherhood President

Larry Imerman, Brotherhood’s incoming President, brings a wealth of Temple, Brotherhood and community experience to his new position.

A Temple member for 17 years, Larry began his Temple involvement as a member of the Library Committee and a board member of Married Group. For two years, he served on the Education Committee. Larry was a member of the board of Family Circle and a member and Chair of the Ways and Means Committee. He served on the Executive Committee and on the Temple’s Board of Trustees from 2008 to 2010. A 2010 recipient of the President’s Cup, Larry currently chairs the Tribute Funds Committee.

Larry’s involvement in Brotherhood has been no less extensive. For the past three years, he has been the chair of Brotherhood’s Mitzvah Day project. Presently, Larry is co-chair of Brotherhood’s successful Sunday Speakers series. He is also the man most familiar with Brotherhood’s past, having written the four-part history of Brotherhood which ran in the 2009-2010 Temple Bulletin.

Larry’s impressive list of community positions includes the past presidencies of the Detroit chapter of the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Genealogical Society and the Southfield Optimist Club. He also served the Optimists as Lt. Governor of the Southern Oakland County District and in various state positions. His efforts on the organization’s behalf earned him the title of Michigan Optimist of the Year in 1989.

Larry is a former member of the board of the Jewish Community Relations Council and a former columnist for the Detroit Jewish News where he wrote articles on the role of volunteers in non-profit organizations. Currently, he is active with the Birmingham Educational Foundation.

Larry is married to Miriam, the Chair of Temple’s Planned Giving Committee. Together they served on the Annual Appeal Committee and co-chaired Temple’s 2009 Telethon. Larry and Miriam’s daughter, Susan, is a former Temple Confirmand. This fall she enters DePaul University in Chicago.

Brotherhood is seeking “ a few good men” to join the Minyan Leaders in conducting services at mourners’ homes. If you feel comfortable chanting and reading Hebrew at Shabbat services, you will be more than qualified for this volunteer position. Chair, Earl Remer, will provide you with both a manual to assist you in conducting services and a prayer book for you to study beforehand. He also asks that you to accompany him while he performs a service.

Should you be interested in joining this special group, please call Earl Remer at 248-669-3813. As Earl has noted, for those who elect to become Minyan Leaders, “there is no higher call to duty”.

Brotherhood Softball
By Jeff Hollander

The Temple Beth El Brotherhood Softball Team returns to the semi finials after last year’s disappointing ending to the season.   This year, 12 Brotherhood teams competed in the league and now we are down to four teams.

Temple Beth defeated Temple Kol Ami, the team that knocked them out of the play-offs last year, 8-2 in the quarter finals.
