GREAT LAKES CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2008 DATES AND ARTISTS
(Special offer below!)
The 15th annual Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, scheduled for June 14-29, will highlight the music of the French school of composers. Several of the 19 concerts will occur at Temple Beth El which, along with St. Hugo of the Hills, Kirk in the Hills and the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, sponsors the Festival.
For each of the past 14 years, the Festival, dedicated to providing outstanding performances of some of the world’s finest chamber works, has brought world-class music to the Temple as well as other venues throughout southeast Michigan.
Combining the resources of Jewish, Protestant and Catholic congregations with those of a prominent chamber music organization has created a strong catalyst for institutional growth. It has also helped foster a dialogue between sponsoring congregations that has brought considerable unexpected rewards. For example, the annual ecumenical Thanksgiving service that involves Beth El with Kirk in the Hills and St. Hugo’s has been a great success.
The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival has received national recognition for the quality of its artist program. Of special note for 2008 is the appearance of four internationally renowned composers: John Harbison, Joan Tower, William Bolcom and John Corigliano. Awards between them include Pulitzers, Oscars, Grammy’s and MacArthur prizes. Each of these artists has previously served as Festival composer-in-residence, and each will turn 70 in 2008. All four composers will attend the Festival at various times, but each will be here for a special birthday performance on the evening of June 23 in the Maas Chapel.
Also new for 2008 is a concert celebrating the role of the harp in chamber music. This performance will take place June 24 at the Seligman Family Center at Detroit Country Day School and include international harp superstars such as Yolanda Kondanassis, Bridget Kibbey, and Judy Loman. The concert is co-sponsored by the American Harp Society, whose biennial meeting is in Detroit at the time.
Artists returning to the Festival in 2008 include James Tocco, Artistic Director and pianist; Jeremy Denk and Ursula Oppens, piano; Ida Kavafian, Joseph Silverstein and Yehonatan Berick, violin; Kim Kashkashian, viola; Andrés Díaz and Paul Katz, cello; Philip Dikeman, flute, Linda Hohenfeld, soprano, the Amernet String Quartet, and Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings.
Performing for the first time will be pianists Menahem Pressler and Edward Auer, violinist Nicholas Kendall, cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio, clarinetist Anthony McGill, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and Beth El’s own Cantor, soprano Rachel Gottlieb. The cantor will sing at the June 23 composer’s concert in the Chapel. Other Festival performances in the Maas Chapel will take place on June 17-18.
