BRAILLE MEANS LITERACY & INDEPENDENCE FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS

The Temple Beth El Sisterhood Braille Bindery Volunteers is a non-profit organization that provides services in the typing, binding and distribution of reading materials in Braille at state, national, and international levels. The bindery was first established in 1962 at Temple Beth El and supplies children’s books to schools, libraries, and individuals on a “paper-exchange” basis, without further costs.

Requests for services are filled in a timely manner by dedicated volunteers. In 2010, nearly 2,000 publications, mostly of children’s books, were produced and distributed. The list of books printed in Braille exceeds 1000 in number and the list is available upon request.

We provide transcriptions for … PERSONAL NEEDS
· fiction and non-fiction books
· greeting cards and letters
· menus
· children’s books
· documents

Donations are always appreciated. Please make the check payable to: Temple Beth El Sisterhood and “earmark” it for the Temple Beth El Braille Bindery account.

Remember that the printed word conveys knowledge. A visually-impaired person’s inability to read printed materials creates special needs. One solution to this problem is Braille materials.

Grateful Thanks To The Braille Bindery Volunteers
From A Happy Mom

We just got box #18, packed on 2/19/13, and I bet you’ve never had a Mom tell you they were in tears because of your work before. Acer has been a reluctant reader. He has actually been forced to read a book a day for the past bit and because he was so far behind, he was reading his kindergarten books. We got the box today, and Mr. Putter and Tabby Pick the Pears was in there. He was so happy to get it, he sat right down at the table and read it aloud to us. His sister (she has heard him read the other books) and I were happy hugging each other because he was reading so well, and he was happy to be doing it.

Calli herself was very happy to get the Guide Dog Mystery; she’s 12 and is the youngest one in Michigan to get a guide dog through MIRA USA. She can’t wait for the rest of the Percy Jackson books to start them.

Thanks again!

BRAILLE BINDERY RECEIVES
HEARTFELT THANKS

To: Barbara Mandelbaum, a Braille Bindery volunteer

I wanted to email you to let you know how much the work that you and your group do has meant to our family. Our daughter Hope is 10 years old and was adopted from Thailand two years ago. When Hope came home, she spoke no English whatsoever. She read Braille in Thai and read the English alphabet in Braille. In the past two years, she has become fluent in Grade 2 Braille and loves to read! Your books have been such a blessing! As I’m sure you are aware, Braille books are very expensive. We buy them as we can, but we could never afford to provide all the books we have ordered from your group. Hope gets so excited when a box of books arrives in the mail! She reads her books over and over again. She has learned so many new words and concepts thru reading. Your group has made a huge difference in our daughter’s life and we thank you so very much!

We invite you to think of Hope and the many other children served by the Bindery when you are honoring or remembering friends and family. Choose the Sisterhood Braille Bindery Fund as the recipient of your gift.
